Here’s how to stay warm, according to our outerwear experts.
1. The Puffer Jacket
“Puffer jackets are actually a must-have for anyone living in colder climates. Pair this insulated jacket over any flannel shirt or sweater or opt for a vest versions to double down on layering under your heavier winter coats.”
“Puffer jackets… I actually wear one every day when it’s cold out! It’s lightweight and really warm. They’re so warm that I only wear a simple pullover underneath. And, they’re good for football games, too. (Canadian ones.)”
2. The Utility Jacket
“The jacket that can hold its own. And, I love it because of all the pockets. Are you kidding me? Since your average male isn’t rocking a handbag, all of this space is perfect for phone, keys, wallets, cold bevvies, whatever. Dress it down with raw denim and flannel shirts all winter long or dress it up with chinos and a refined button down.”
“Wallet. Keys. iPhone. Android. And, they’re pretty warm too. I’d wear this with jeans. They’re easy to wear.”
3. Jean Jacket
“The ultimate, all-purpose second layer. It got a bad rap post-’80s but we chalk that up to a mild identity crisis. Things have smoothed over now and we don’t think this style will ever fade away. Wear it as a middle layer under a heavier coat or as a top layer. And, don’t be afraid of double denim. Seriously.”
“I wear these sometimes because I live in San Francisco, and it doesn’t get super cold. But, then I have to subject myself to Canadian tuxedo jokes, so I reserve them for special occasions only and I always wear them with black jeans.”
4. The Wool Jacket
“A very cool option for the well-dressed man. Seriously, everyone needs a wool coat, and here’s why: it gives you the option to dress up (or not). It’s innate structure and up-leveled fabric give you to the option for a more formal option. Or, just wear it on the weekend over jeans and a hoodie—that’s laissez-faire style at its best. “
“Wait, let me Google this. Oh, yeah. They’re stylish! They’re good for a night on the town. Keeps you warm until 2 am.”
5. The Bomber Jacket
“Fun fact: The aptly named bomber jacket gets its name from keeping pilots during WWII warm at high altitudes. Wear them oversized as a layering piece over a hoodie and black denim or go the James Dean route and style with a white T-shirt and cuffed jeans.”
